How to Grow Your Interpreting Business Online: Tips for Attracting New Clients

New Series!

Here we go again, this time with a different type of business - a professional service - conference interpreting.

I've already done a series on growing your food truck business and even an e-cargo bike-sharing business, but now I'm moving into a new area. Having run my own business, I inherently understand the needs and challenges of 'going online' when your business is completely offline.

One of the first challenges is a lack of understanding of how the Internet can grow a professional services business. Funny, because we have probably gone online to find a painter, lawyer, or doctor, so why should this be a challenge? People who have been in their field for many years and provide a high-quality service have spent little time researching their field online. Searching for yourself is a fun exercise to begin with.

It is always a pleasure to see the first ah-ha's. Then extending the search to some of their competitors to see what they might be doing online often leads to a "this is a real thing!" reaction.

The next challenge is time. Finding the time to devote to 'internet activities' that do not initially bring in additional funds is a difficult step to climb. These professionals are very talented in their fields and spend most of their time and energy creating the best service for their clients. Asking them to dedicate 3 hours a week to write a blog post, 3 Instagram or LinkedIn posts, and respond to any comments or reviews they may have received is a tough ask.

So here's my next 5-part series on growing your interpreting business online. There were 2 triggers for this series; a new client and an offer from a university here in Germany to give a talk to a master course on growing your translation business online. Now, to you these areas may seem a bit, well, strange, perhaps extremely niche, but I have many translators and interpreters in my circle of friends. But that's for another article 😊.

Starting next week, I will be publishing a weekly article on how to grow your professional services business online. Remember, this is for almost any service business, whether you are a gardener, a plumber, or a fitness trainer. You can all use these tactics to grow your business and attract new clients through the Internet. Join me on this journey and share your thoughts!
