Mallorca, Day 8 - Final hard day

Friday, 23 MarchAs planned, today went into the hills. The weather was perfect for it as well. I had been told that if there is rain or if the roads are wet it can be quite dangerous on the switchbacks, particularly when descending. As I saw yesterday when just over the top of a climb a fellow had hit some gravel in the corner and his wheels lost traction. Nothing serious but still it can happen at anytime.(arrival in Galilea)
20120323-202839.jpgToday was another classic route just west of Palma called the Galilea. It meant riding through Palma first to get past it and then head west from there into the hills. It didn't take long before the first 200m increase in elevation came, actually pretty quick. Compared to riding the Orient yesterday where I felt I was part of a bike festival, today was much quieter. Not alone, but far fewer bikers.(remains?)
20120323-203021.jpgGalilea was the first of three climbs today and I made an effort to keep my ride out of the so-called red zone. Problem is that I ride the hills in the smallest gear the bike offers (34x27) which has me riding around 10kph even at times down to 9. Much slower and I would fall over. So when my cadence drops to about 60 it is slow. I tacked on Valdemossa to the tour and that was nice, especially the decent back to Palma is a big wide road. Cars were not the problem there as I was riding the speed limit all the way down, almost 5 miles.(always uphill)

20120323-203215.jpgI did really well and felt quite good even at the end riding back against the winds home. The climbs together had just over 1200 meters of climb in them and while the distance was just over 100k it was still 5 hours in the saddle.(seated lunch)
20120323-203335.jpgI am pretty tired. I had thought to ride another epic ride along the coast tomorrow but I am having second thoughts. Now with 5000 meters of climbing in my legs I need a flatter rolling course. Will see what tonight tells my body. I know I am full of those happy hormones but my brain is telling me it has almost been enough. It has been good here. The weather looks good so there is one more ride in me. Then time for a real holiday(!).Daily stats: 5h02m, 104km, 142 avg HR, temp 19C, 1215m climbing, 3560 calories spent, PE medium-hardbackCamp Sub-TTL 31h27m, 667km, 5205m, 21650cal
