Terrorists Abound
I would love to see an FAA security guard here on vacation. Long black veils are everywhere!Funny that I write this - as this is my third visit here this year. One would think that I had gotten used to it, but this is new. The black veil is forbidden under Malaysian law and has been for quite a while. I think it was to discourage fundamentalism. So local dress, while Muslim, is quite colorful. Sure, it's to the wrist, ankles and all that but with Hawaiian motifs. Now, the streets are crowded with men followed by their entourage, separated by the required footage. Women completely veiled with only their hands and eyes visible. Their husbands and children in Levi's and Nikes. It causes me to turn my head on many occasions.I was talking to our of my local contacts here and he explained it so, under current times, do you think they can travel to London or elsewhere? Here they have a moderate Islamic population and they can easily spend their time (and money) without worry of harassment. Guess that's true (think of the FAA guard). This is a place where one regularly reads of the morality police catching a young, unmarried couple in the park holding hands. Fines and the front pages for the both! But then KL is a mixture of so many cultures, how can a young person orient themselves? A sign in a supermarket says 'It is forbidden to sell alcohol to Muslims and those under 18'. Interesting that they need a sign for that. Do they carry cards? The streets are full of western clothed people along with those in the more traditional garb. It is easy to tell the general national heritage of those you see on the streets. Young Japanese/Chinese are dressed like it is 1980 (or 2008) and disco time. The Indians in jeans and long sleeved shirts similar to the Malay except then the Malay (Muslim) women are veiled but only their heads. Still wear jeans or slacks. It has been a real interesting time here, now 3 months in total but it is time to go home. I want to see my 'normal' German family. Well, at least our version of it in Spiderman swim trunks and Audubon Zoo tees.
